Ploeger Paper Mill – Runde Castle of Schieder

Rivers as full as they haven't been in a long time – hike during a brief break in the rain near Lake Schieder.

On the way to mental relaxation: Our hike through Schieder with the Plöger paper mill and impressive river floods after days of rain was a small adventure.

After what felt like forever, we finally got away again to work on our mental health – in other words, we went hiking. Schieder, with the Plöger paper mill, the castle, the Emmer river, and some beautiful stretches of forest, offers (besides the lake, of course) fantastic hiking spots, all of which we were fortunate enough to visit.

What made this hike special was that it had rained continuously for days beforehand, turning the rivers and streams into raging torrents, which was truly impressive. It also made us realize just how much water must have fallen in the rest of Germany.

We had to take a 2 km detour on our way, otherwise we would have walked through an area where an active hunt was taking place – you don't see hunters with their shotguns there every day. Of course, we gladly accepted this detour…

Along the entire route, you have the opportunity to cross a variety of smaller and larger bridges, some made of wood, some of which are made of metal grids – a real little highlight.

After the Christmas holidays, this little hike did us a world of good and allowed us to replenish our "reserves" a bit.
