Experience Prague: Sightseeing highlights between history and modernity
A day packed with highlights in Prague! From a relaxed breakfast on the banks of the Vltava River to the impressive Prague underground and the fascinating Lumia Gallery – we'll explore the city on our own and experience unexpected surprises. Join us on this unforgettable city trip!
Our second day in Prague begins with a relaxed breakfast at Artic Bakehaus . This charming bakery offers delicious croissants, specialty coffees, and sourdough sandwiches – all absolutely delicious! We try three different grilled sandwiches, a cinnamon roll, and a nougat croissant, accompanied by refreshing drinks. With our breakfast in hand, we find a cozy bench by the Vltava River, near the National Theatre, and enjoy the beautiful morning.

From Freud to the astronomical clock

Our plan for the day is set: Before heading off on our booked medieval underground tour , we'll explore Prague on our own. We'll stroll along the Vltava River towards the city center and admire the ornate buildings steeped in history.
Our first stop is a real highlight: the suspended statue of Sigmund Freud . High above the pedestrian zone, he hovers at a height of approximately 20 meters – a work of art symbolizing Freud's fear of death. A fascinating spot on our tour!
Since it's almost noon, a classic sight is a must: the astronomical clock at the town hall . Without really knowing what to expect, we arrive punctually in the crowded town hall square. The intricate mechanism starts moving, the skeleton strikes the hour, and a few figures pass by. But that's it – somehow we'd expected more! We look at each other, puzzled, and burst out laughing. Nevertheless, anyone in Prague shouldn't miss this spectacle.
After a short walk, we get a coffee and wait for the start of our tour.
Underground Discoveries – The Prague Cellar World

Our guide Maxim , an enthusiastic history student, takes us on a fascinating journey through Prague's underground cellars . Centuries of flooding have raised Prague up to two stories – but the old cellars survived. We descend into Roman-style vaults while Maxim humorously recounts Prague's past: political upheavals, religious conflicts, and the famous Defenestration of Prague.
A particularly poignant moment is the story of the 28 crosses in the Old Town Square , commemorating the execution of revolutionary leaders. A particularly curious detail: one of the men attempted to escape from Prague Castle through a toilet, but was later officially beheaded again – “because, after all, everything has to be in its proper order,” as Maxim dryly remarks.
Culinary break at Meat Vandals

After the exciting tour, we need a break. Just around the corner, we discover Meat Vandals – a small restaurant with excellent street food. We order croquettes with pulled chicken and cheese, served with a spicy chipotle mayonnaise – a real treat!
Off to Prague Castle – a picture-perfect city view

It's now half past three, and we still haven't made it to Prague Castle . So we take the bus up, enjoying the breathtaking view of the city along the way. As soon as we enter the castle complex, we feel like we're in a small town – full of magnificent mansions, churches, and monuments.
St. Vitus Cathedral , the largest Gothic church in the Czech Republic, is particularly impressive. We stroll through the extensive grounds, soak up the atmosphere, and let ourselves be enchanted by the majestic architecture.
Modern art at the Lumia Gallery
Once our sightseeing hunger was satisfied, we visited the Lumia Gallery – an interactive exhibition of light, film, and music. The artworks that react to movement were particularly fascinating. My personal highlight was the hall of mirrors , which provided a truly surreal experience. Also intriguing was a screen that traced our silhouettes as points of light and reacted to our movements.
A perfect dinner at U Černého Medvěda

After so much culture, it's time for a relaxing dinner. We stop at the U Černého Medvěda beer restaurant and enjoy the relaxed, humorous atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive – without being intrusive.
On the table we have chicken leg with grilled vegetables, schnitzel, and goulash with dumplings . Everything tastes fantastic! A perfect end to this eventful day.
Thank you, Prague – what a day!
We look back on an unforgettable day filled with wonderful memories: from a leisurely breakfast to historical sights, culinary highlights, and modern art. Prague has enchanted us – and we're already looking forward to our next visit!
