This weekend we're not the only ones visiting the Volcanic Eifel region. After a fantastic breakfast in bed (in the campervan), we set off – about an hour's drive from our campsite at the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.
Our idea: We'd take our chances and head straight for a campsite, planning to hike around some of the impressive craters of the Volcanic Eifel region. No problem, since the websites of our chosen campsites even offer a live occupancy calendar. Much to my dismay, but to our good fortune.
We made a game of checking every two minutes to see if we could get a spot. At one point it got really tight, but eventually there were a few spaces left. We ended up at the Vulkaneifel campervan park, very close to Schalkenmehren.
The "registration" process is incredibly easy: as soon as we pass through the barrier, our license plate is scanned. At the machine where we register in person, this license plate is even suggested. If not, we enter it manually. We receive a prepaid card (€5 deposit) which we use to activate the showers and electronics on the campsite.
The entire campsite is paved and perfectly level – at least where we are. The pitches are generously sized, allowing us to comfortably set up chairs and a table. The campsite has four toilets and showers, all of which are quite decent and very clean.
Especially convenient: They even have a bread roll delivery service and – my personal highlight – a vending machine where you can get everything your heart desires, from eggs and pasta to delicious local ice cream. Payment is easy with a card or smartphone.
The campsite's location is also ideal, as various hikes start from here, for example around the Schalkenmehrener Maar, the Weinfelder Maar, or the Gemündener Maar. Here we experience the Volcanic Eifel region in all its glory. Those who prefer coffee and cake can skip the hikes and head straight to the sleepy village of Schalkenmehren.
Conclusion
Our spontaneous trip to the Volcanic Eifel region shows how easy it can be to find a suitable campsite, even on busy weekends. The combination of relaxed camping, modern infrastructure, and the diverse hiking and adventure opportunities in the region provides exactly the mix we're looking for: a break from everyday life, an immersion in nature, and pure enjoyment. It's moments like these that motivate us to continue traveling with our campervan and good friends, sharing our experiences, and creating a vibrant community around the adventure of camping.
