Volcanoes in Germany? It sounds more dramatic than it is – and yet the Volcanic Eifel region holds plenty of magic.
Our hike in Rhineland-Palatinate leads us through a landscape steeped in history, impressive crater lakes – the so-called maars – and charming views. Perfect for anyone who loves nature, exercise, and atmosphere.
Start at Schalkenmehrener Maar
We start directly from the parking area, which is just a few steps from the hiking trail. A small staircase leads us up to a footpath that runs along the right side of the crater rim. After about ten minutes, we feel like we're at the highest point of the Schalkenmehrener Maar – and enjoy the first magnificent views of the small village, which nestles picturesquely against the crater's edge.
The sun accompanies us, the weather is kind to us, and we meet some other hikers who are making the most of the day just like us.
Stopover at Maarkreuz
From the crater rim, the trail continues along the "Daun-Senheld" glider airfield – probably the reason why drones aren't allowed here. We make a short stop at the Maarkreuz. Although there's an opportunity to rest here, after almost two kilometers we're not ready for a break – we want to keep going.
Weinfelder Maar: Directly on the water
After crossing the L64 and passing through a game fence, we reach the next highlight: the Weinfelder Maar. This time we're standing right on the shore. The sun is still shining brightly on us – perhaps a little too brightly. The climb to the next point, the Mäuseberg, is starting to test our stamina.
Once we reached the top, we settled down on one of the loungers – pure bliss. The view of the Weinfelder Maar and the surrounding countryside was breathtaking. If we had stayed just a few minutes longer, we probably would have taken a little nap.
Goats posing – and a narrow tower
Further along the path, we encounter free-roaming goats who seem just as relaxed as we are. They almost willingly pose for photos – whether out of vanity or indifference remains their secret.
Shortly afterwards we reach the Dronke Tower. The climb up the narrow spiral staircase is a bit challenging with a camera backpack, but the panoramic view from the top rewards every effort.
Through woods and meadows back to Schalkenmehren
The descent leads along a shady path beside the Gemündener Maar and into an almost untouched forest. The silence and coolness there offer a welcome change. The path is somewhat long, but at the end the landscape opens up again – a vast meadow stretches out before us, looking as if it had sprung directly from an old Windows wallpaper.
We feel the sun on our faces and look forward to a cool drink – or even better: a piece of cake.
Finale with coffee and cake
After about three hours, we reach the Schalkenmehrener Maar again. The tour ends as it began – with a magnificent view and a great atmosphere. In the small village, we treat ourselves to coffee and cake and reminisce about the tour.
In conclusion: The circular hike around the volcanic lakes near Schalkenmehren is popular – and rightly so. It offers a perfect blend of nature, history, and panoramic views. If, like us, you prefer a more tranquil experience, it's best to start early in the morning or during the week. In total, we hiked for about four hours and covered approximately 12 kilometers.
