The campsite “Camping municipal – le Grand Canyon” near the Verdon Gorge

Discover the rustic charm of 'Camping municipal – le Grand Canyon' near the Verdon Gorge! Free choice of pitch, fresh air, and breathtaking natural scenery await you. Perfect for outdoor sports enthusiasts and active holidaymakers.

The campsite is incredibly cheap, but booking is a bit more complicated than on the coast. You have to fill out a small form, send it to the appropriate email address, and wait for confirmation – but somehow it's also refreshing!

Since we arrived outside of office hours, we cheekily chose a spot ourselves, as suggested in the messages we received. We opted for a small, grassy corner spot and set up camp. There's plenty of room for bicycles, a seating area, an awning, and so on; the pitches are a decent size.

The campsite can best be described as "rustic" and certainly doesn't aim for luxury. The sanitary facilities are clean, but not spotless – which is perfectly fine! Since many hikers and cyclists stay here, you can see many charging their smartphones in the washrooms, especially in the evenings – apparently, the fear of theft isn't particularly high here.

The campsite is tidy, yet also natural. Maneuvering is easy, and the neighbors are all friendly. Although no one is supposed to enter the campsite after 8 p.m., there was still traffic well into the night, which could be considered a minor drawback.

During our stay, the large gate was not locked at night, which was probably not necessary in this area.

Our little highlight was the small dog who said hello at almost every seat – and we don't know if he belonged to one of the guests or someone from the neighborhood – but no matter. He was really cute!

One of the reasons this place is truly fantastic is its proximity to the Route de la Crete (a paradise for motorcyclists and anyone who loves panoramic views), the small, sleepy village, and, for stargazers, the almost non-existent light pollution. You can take amazing photos here if you come at the right time of year!

Services provided for approximately €36 and two nights' accommodation.

  • free seats
  • Electricity, waste disposal, wastewater disposal
  • Sanitary facilities with toilets and showers

Advantages

  • Super affordable
  • Easy registration and deregistration (flexible) and payment by card.
  • Great location and excursions into the Verdon Gorge, Route Crete highly recommended.
  • Beautiful scenery, very clear air
  • Village with shopping facilities within walking distance

Disadvantages

  • Fresh water was apparently not included – however, we couldn't find anywhere to pay…
  • The sanitary facilities could be a bit more modern, but for the price you can't complain.
  • There was still traffic on the square until late in the evening, somewhat noisy.

Conclusion

The “Camping municipal – le Grand Canyon” campsite near the Verdon Gorge offers a rustic and natural camping experience at an unbeatable price. Despite the somewhat complicated booking process and basic sanitary facilities, the site impresses with its spacious pitches, friendly atmosphere, and proximity to stunning natural scenery such as the Route de la Crete and the Verdon Gorge. Flexible check-in and check-out times, as well as the option to pay by card, make for a hassle-free stay. A particular highlight is the low light pollution, providing perfect conditions for stargazing. Minor drawbacks such as nighttime traffic and the charge for fresh water are more than compensated for by the many advantages and the beautiful surroundings.
