After a leisurely breakfast at the campsite and a short but winding drive, we reach the starting point of our first hike of the day: the Holzweg (Woodland Trail) near Freudenstadt. This family-friendly trail lies in the heart of the Black Forest, is about 2.5 kilometers long, and is full of charming details.

The Black Forest: Forest air and first impressions

We park our camper in the small parking area at the edge of the forest. From there, a narrow path leads downhill, through a wooden gate – and we immediately receive our first information about wood as a building material and habitat. It's still early in the day, but the sun is already shining through the canopy, creating a beautiful play of shadows on the forest floor. It's slowly getting warm, perfect conditions for a short exploration.

Learning through play: sound, nature and movement

Along the path, interactive stations invite you to experience wood with all your senses. We hear how different types of wood sound, learn which tree species are particularly good conductors of sound, and discover how the forest changes over time. It's a fantastic combination of physical activity and playful learning, especially for families.

A real highlight – not just for children – is the large marble run in a clearing. For 50 cents, you get a wooden marble and can send it on its way. Unfortunately, we didn't have any change, which made me a little sad. The family next to us was luckier and clearly enjoyed the run – a small moment that shows how much joy can be found in such simple things. My tip: Don't forget small change!

Playground and picnic: a break in the sun

In the same clearing, picnic benches and a large playground invite you to rest. We sit down, enjoy the sun, and recharge our batteries for the rest of the hike. Afterwards, we continue into the forest, following gentle to moderate inclines.

The next adventure awaits there: a long jump pit. Here we can test whether we can jump farther than the forest creatures. I just barely manage it – it was either the frog or the mouse, I'm not quite sure anymore. Either way, it's fun!

Magical moment: 100 meters above the forest floor

Then comes a section that truly lives up to its name, "Holzweg" (Wood Path). Ahead of us lie roughly 100 meters of wooden planks, on which we float above the forest floor. The moss-covered ground, the tall, densely packed trees, and the sunlight breaking through the canopy in small rays – this is one of those magical moments that stays with you.

The return journey: views and farewell

Finally, there's one last uphill climb, then a wide gravel path leads back to the parking lot. Shortly before reaching the destination, the view opens up to the valley – we see the ski lift, which is naturally closed in spring, and a small playground, almost as charming as the one in the clearing.

After about an hour and a half, we're back at the camper. We feel like we've discovered a real family gem. With children, the hike will surely be even more beautiful – and longer. Once our little man is born, we'll definitely be back!
