Timanfaya National Park

If you're in Lanzarote, you should definitely visit Timanfaya National Park at least once. Here you can learn about the island's fascinating history.

Most of the tourism is concentrated on the "main volcano," Montaña del Fuego, so it's best to arrive there as early as possible. For €12 per person, you get entry to the national park and can take a bus tour through the volcanic landscape. It's not permitted to explore the rugged terrain on your own. This is due to nature conservation efforts, as lichens grow on the volcanic rock, causing it to slowly decompose. Stepping on these lichens disrupts this vital process, so all visitors should strictly adhere to the rules.

Is a bus trip through the area worthwhile? Certainly, because the audio guide provides some interesting information, and the bus even stops at a few exciting spots along the way, allowing you to take some great pictures through the windows.

Even if you don't want to eat directly on Montaña del Fuego (they do have chicken grilled with the volcanic heat), it's worth taking a look at the grill station and witnessing the demonstration of the immense heat.

If you're still curious before or after your visit, a detour to the Visitor Center a little further towards Tiaz is worthwhile. Here, in an air-conditioned atmosphere, you can learn more about the creatures and rock types, or pick up a souvenir or two for those back home. Entry is even free – so definitely check it out!
