On our way back from the Black Forest, we're not quite ready to head straight home. We don't want this road trip to simply fizzle out; we're looking for one last experience that will leave us with that special holiday feeling. The Kellerwald-Edersee National Park in Hesse is practically on our route anyway. We've been here before, a few years ago. The accessible treetop walkway is just a short detour and sounds like the perfect blend of nature, tranquility, and a little adventure.
On the way up
From the camper, it's just a few minutes to the entrance. Tickets are available right at the parking lot. The path then leads through the woods for a few hundred meters before you reach the Treetop Walk. The trail winds its way gently uphill through the blossoming treetops, bringing you unusually close to the trees and allowing you to experience the forest from a perspective rarely seen elsewhere. The intricately crafted wooden walkways and supports immediately catch the eye, conveying the meticulous attention to detail that went into creating this walkway.
Nature you can touch
Along the way, we discover carved sculptures, including a raccoon, a pig, and an owl. There are also oversized wooden insects – ants and stag beetles included. We especially enjoy the interactive stations where we can smell natural materials and playfully test which wood or resin they are. It's fun to discover new things without it feeling like a lecture.
Almost alone in the forest
What makes this visit so pleasant: We practically have the trail to ourselves. Perhaps it's because it's slightly cloudy and we arrived relatively early. Both seem like good tips for avoiding waiting times. Those with limited mobility will find parking spaces right near the entrance. Everything here is relaxed, and we quickly realize that our spontaneous decision was absolutely the right one.
A moment that will last
Once we reach the top, there's a pair of binoculars on the platform. We look through them and spot an eagle circling above Lake Edersee. It eventually disappears among the trees on the opposite shore. This brief moment is unexpected and precisely what makes this stop so special. No grand spectacle, no staged highlight – simply nature unfolding when you bring time and patience.
Our conclusion
The treetop walkway in Kellerwald-Edersee is no longer a hidden gem, but a true must-see when traveling in the region. The combination of barrier-free access, lovingly designed paths, and little surprises along the way creates a harmonious experience. For us, this visit was the perfect end to our road trip – a peaceful, beautiful moment surrounded by nature, bringing our vacation to a satisfying close.
