This time we're out for about five hours – for a leisurely twelve kilometers. Our destination: a short break at Lake Hennesee in the Sauerland region. Although the sky is overcast, we start the day in good spirits. After all, we've planned the weekend for exactly this: exercise in nature, short breaks to catch our breath, and a bit of relaxation in the countryside.
The hike is easy and requires no special skills. Along the way, there are plenty of lovely opportunities to stop for refreshments or a short break – perfect for a relaxing day.
Animal encounters and first glimpses
After breakfast, we set off from the holiday farm towards the lake. First, we drove through the small village – past ponies and shaggy sheep with curved horns. Of course, I had to stop and take photos. Only one pony didn't seem too keen on my camera and kept pushing its way into the frame – perhaps it just wanted to be in the picture too?
The path initially leads us gently uphill, as we are not walking directly along the water. From the top, however, we are repeatedly treated to fantastic views of the green landscape surrounding the Hennesee. The sky is dramatically overcast, which lends the scene a special atmosphere.
Shortly after passing a cornfield, we enter a small wooded area with tall fir trees – pleasantly shady and wonderfully quiet.
A stopover at Xaver's Ranch on Lake Hennesee with your four-legged friend
After about five kilometers, we reach a small inn, Xaver's Ranch. An incredibly friendly dog greets us – and the service is just as warm and welcoming. Here we treat ourselves to a little refreshment before continuing on our way.
Pigs, cows and a feeling of the sea
In good spirits, we continued our hike – past grazing pigs and curious cows. We gradually approached the lakeshore. Although the weather remained changeable, we were lucky and stayed dry.
The path leads directly along the Hennesee lake, back towards our camper. We stroll along at a leisurely pace, enjoying the peace and quiet and the gentle lapping of the water. Eventually, the Henne Dam appears before us – a beautiful end to this hike.
Sleep in style – and with a mattress
On the other side of the lake, we spot a few campers with tents – a nice idea for those who prefer a bit more adventure. We ourselves, however, are quite happy to be spending the night in our camper. With a proper bed and decent bedding – a little bit of comfort is always welcome.
Conclusion: Uncomplicated, beautiful, and simply authentic.
And to be quite honest? That's basically it – but that's precisely what makes this day so special. The hike is wonderfully relaxing, the area simply charming. We encounter animals everywhere, and the forest and lake alternate, creating beautiful scenery.
For those who love nature, are looking for an uncomplicated hiking route and like to take a good photo now and then: Lake Hennesee is definitely worth a visit.
